Integration Project with Microsoft Word

About my experience

This year, I had the opportunity to work on an integration project with MS Word as the sole product designer. I integrated a complex document automation platform into a small MS Word add-in, which is central to ESCRIBA's business. This project has been one of my favourites, as it involved crafting a smooth and streamlined experience with many complex and creative challenges that I was trusted to tackle.
I encountered many first-time experiences, such as working under extensive technical constraints, designing without direct user contact or much user research, and being the lone designer. While I have always been confident in my analytical abilities, this project has pushed me to grow as a designer in many ways beyond just my craft.

SUMMARY

Simplify documents with ESCRIBA Designer

ESCRIBA Designer brings collaboration and centralized document management to familiar Word environment. Now users can work together on documents, keep everything organized, and track revisions - all without leaving Word!

PROBLEM BREIF

Making changes and working together on documents in Word can be a mess. It's hard to keep track of who edited what, find the latest version, and collaborate smoothly. Switching between tools for edits, templates, and storage creates a messy workflow.

Key Learnings & Challenges

Understanding the Ecosystem

Staying Agile

Working beyond

At Escriba, you are part of a complex network of people, their work, and their users. To perform well in your role, you must develop a deep understanding of everything from the business itself to the workflows of everyone involved, whether directly or indirectly, in your project.

The project started with a loose outline, and new insights constantly shifted its direction. I discovered that being agile—quickly iterating and starting over when needed—was vital to tackle these evolving challenges.

This project pushed me beyond design. I learned to not only create great products, but also to establish design processes that ensure clear communication for future projects.

Shoutouts

Huge thanks to Armin, the project owner, for their endless patience with my constant pings and pokes for clarifications. And a shout-out to Fisnik and Chandni for being awesome support and feedback partners!

There is lot of stuff to show so ...
